Wczesnym  popo\u0142udniem Routemaster obs\u0142uguj\u0105cy lini\u0119 numer 159 zjecha\u0142 do zajezdni Brixton  w po\u0142udniowym Londynie. Niekt\u00f3rzy mi\u0142o\u015bnicy wys\u0142u\u017conej maszyny od rana czekali  w kolejce na pocz\u0105tkowym przystanku na Oxford Street, by towarzyszy\u0107  Routemasterowi w ostatnim kursie. Od tej chwili autobusy te b\u0119d\u0105 je\u017adzi\u0142y tylko  na dw\u00f3ch kr\u00f3tkich turystycznych trasach w centrum miasta, aczkolwiek bilety  b\u0119d\u0105 kosztowa\u0107 tyle samo co, w zwyk\u0142ych autobusach. Normalne linie b\u0119d\u0105  obs\u0142ugiwane przez bardziej nowoczesne maszyny &#8211; pi\u0119trowe, ale tak\u017ce zwyk\u0142e  przegubowe, kt\u00f3rych londy\u0144czycy szczeg\u00f3lnie nie lubi\u0105. Routemastery, z tyln\u0105  otwart\u0105 platform\u0105, na kt\u00f3r\u0105 mo\u017cna wskoczy\u0107 i zeskoczy\u0107 w czasie jazdy, z  zakr\u0119conymi schodkami na g\u00f3rne pi\u0119tro i silnikiem z przodu, zosta\u0142y  zaprojektowane specjalnie dla Londynu. W 1956 roku zast\u0105pi\u0142y w brytyjskiej  stolicy trolejbusy. &#8222;W\u00f3wczas by\u0142a to bardzo nowoczesna maszyna. Pierwszy  autobus w ca\u0142o\u015bci wykonany z metalowych cz\u0119\u015bci, ogrzewany wewn\u0105trz, z  siedzeniami tak wygodnymi, jak w prywatnych samochodach&quot; &#8211; opowiada\u0142  dziennikarzom na pok\u0142adzie Routemastera Mike Watson z londy\u0144skiego  przedsi\u0119biorstwa komunikacji miejskiej. Wyprodukowano w sumie 2760  Routemaster\u00f3w &#8211; pierwszy prototyp powsta\u0142 w 1954 roku, a w 1963 roku rozpocz\u0119\u0142a  si\u0119 seryjna produkcja. W kolejnych latach ulepszano projekt, jednak po 1968  roku nie powsta\u0142 \u017caden nowy Routemaster. W latach 70. i 80. zast\u0119powano je  nowymi maszynami, z silnikiem umieszczonym w tylnej cz\u0119\u015bci oraz niewymagaj\u0105ce  obecno\u015bci konduktora. Wi\u0119kszo\u015b\u0107 mieszka\u0144c\u00f3w Londynu zapewne b\u0119dzie t\u0119skni\u0107 za  &quot;mistrzem tras&quot;, kt\u00f3ry towarzyszy\u0142 im od p\u00f3\u0142 wieku.
